Oakwood is not OakWood
OakWood Designers & Builders Inc. by the Liptak Group is not the Oakwood Group of Kingston. We are a separate Ottawa family business, founded in 1956, with different ownership, different corporate records, and no connection to the Kingston company, also working in the Ottawa area, whose owner was charged with fraud by Kingston Police in February 2026.
Because the names, services, and geography overlap, homeowners, trades, suppliers, media, and others have confused the two companies. Some Reddit posts, online reviews, and comments about "Oakwood" do not refer to OakWood by the Liptak Group. If you read something negative online, verify the legal company name, project location, contract details, and source before assuming it refers to us.
If you are unsure, send it to us. We will help confirm whether the post, review, or complaint is about OakWood by the Liptak Group, the Oakwood Group, another unrelated Oakwood-named company, or something else.
Quick Verification
- Our legal name: OakWood Designers & Builders Inc.
- Our website: oakwood.ca
- Our company: Ottawa-based, family-owned, founded in 1956.
- Not us: Oakwood is spelled with a small "w" or the Oakwood Group of Kingston.
- What to check: contract name, project location, website, address, and corporate record.
In Short
Oakwood is not OakWood
OakWood by the Liptak Group and The Oakwood Group are not the same company.
The names are confusingly similar. The services overlap. The geography has overlapped. Both companies have been associated with residential construction, renovations, kitchens, additions, and custom homes in Ottawa and the surrounding region.
That overlap has caused real confusion.
Homeowners have confused the two companies. Trades and suppliers have confused the two companies. Media, bankers, lawyers, investors, and prospective clients have also contacted us trying to understand which Oakwood was which.
That is why this article exists.
The Two Companies Are Different
| OakWood by the Liptak Group | The Oakwood Group | |
|---|---|---|
| Legal identity | OakWood Designers & Builders Inc. | The Oakwood Group |
| Ownership | Liptak family | Separate ownership |
| History | Founded in 1956 | Separate company registered in 2022 |
| Core location | Ottawa region | Kingston-based corporate registration |
| Service area | Ottawa and surrounding region | Kingston and Ottawa-region activity |

Both companies are called OakWood. The names are close, with only a small or large "w" difference. The services overlap. The geography has overlapped. Some trade and supplier relationships may appear familiar to people outside the industry.
That is exactly why confusion has occurred.
But the companies are separate.
What the Public Record Shows
The Oakwood Group is NOT OakWood by the Liptak Group.
Publicly available corporate records identify The Oakwood Group as a separate company. Kingston Police and media coverage have identified the separate Kingston-based company and its owner in relation to fraud charges.
We are not commenting on the criminal proceedings. Those proceedings will run their course.
We are stating one verifiable fact:
The company reported in connection with the Kingston Police fraud charge is not OakWood Designers & Builders Inc. by the Liptak Group.
Homeowners can verify this through:
- Kingston Police public statements.
- CTV News coverage.
- Ontario Business Registry records.
- The legal name on any proposal, invoice, contract, or corporate record.
- The website and addresses associated with each company.
What the Confusion Has Looked Like
This has not been a theoretical problem.
Over the past several years, we have received calls from people upset about work we did not perform. Some believed they had hired us when they had not.
We have heard from trade partners asking about payments we did not owe, for projects we did not contract, manage, or build.
We have had reporters, lawyers, bankers, investors, homeowners, and suppliers contact us to ask which Oakwood was which OakWood.
We have reviewed online posts and comments where the facts, project locations, company details, or surrounding circumstances showed that the content was not about OakWood by the Liptak Group.
In some cases, the issue becomes clear very quickly.
Was the project in Kingston?
Was the contract with The Oakwood Group?
Was the legal name on the paperwork different from OakWood Designers & Builders Inc.?
Was the address unrelated to one of our Ottawa Design Centre locations?
Those are the kinds of details that matter.
Unfortunately, online reputation does not always preserve those distinctions. A homeowner may read the word "Oakwood," remember only the name, and assume the post applies to us.
That assumption can be wrong.

A Separate Matter: Online Attacks and Misattributed Posts
There is also a separate issue.
Beyond the confusion involving the Oakwood Group, OakWood by the Liptak Group has been the target of a documented online reputational attack since 2023.
This has included fake or misleading online activity, anonymous posts, fabricated reviews, extortion attempts, and misattributed content. We have reported the matter to police, retained forensic support, and are pursuing available legal remedies.
We are not asking the public to resolve that issue for us. That is for police, counsel, investigators, and the courts.
But it is important context because a homeowner doing online research may encounter three different categories of content:
- Content about OakWood by the Liptak Group.
- Content about the Oakwood Group of Kingston that has been misattributed to our OakWood.
- Content connected to a separate documented online reputational attack.
Those categories are not the same.
That is why verification matters.
Who OakWood by the Liptak Group Actually Is
OakWood Designers & Builders Inc. is an Ottawa-based, family-owned design-build company founded in 1956.
We are now a fourth-generation family business. The same family name remains attached to the company, the work, and the long-term accountability behind it.
OakWood has completed more than 10,700 projects in the Ottawa region, including renovations, additions, kitchens, custom homes, and broader design-build work.
We operate three Ottawa Design Centre locations.
We are a registered Tarion builder for new homes.
We are members of recognized industry organizations, including GOHBA, OHBA, CHBA, RenoMark, and OCA.
We are a CHBA Net Zero Builder.
We have been recognized repeatedly in the Ottawa market, including through Consumer Choice Award recognition.
Every one of these items can be verified independently.
That is the point.
A homeowner should not have to rely on an anonymous post, a company's marketing claim, or a single online review. Responsible due diligence should be based on records, contracts, credentials, direct conversations, and project-specific verification.
Why We Are Addressing This Publicly
We understand why a homeowner researches before calling a builder. They should.
A renovation, addition, kitchen, or custom home is a significant financial and personal decision. Clients are right to ask hard questions before hiring anyone.
The problem is not due diligence.
The problem is misidentification.
If a homeowner reads about a different Oakwood company and believes the story is about us, their due diligence has been misdirected.
If a homeowner reads an anonymous post with no contract name, no project address, no legal entity, and no verifiable facts, they may be reacting to something that cannot be properly assessed.
We are addressing this publicly because silence can be misread as acceptance.
It is not.
OakWood by the Liptak Group has spent nearly 70 years building its name in Ottawa. That name should not be confused with a separate company, separate ownership, separate corporate records, or separate legal proceedings.
What We Ask Prospective Clients To Do
We ask every prospective client to verify before deciding.
Please do not rely only on this article. Please do not rely only on Reddit. Please do not rely only on Google reviews. Please do not rely only on advertising.
Verify.
- Check the legal name on your proposal or contract.
- Confirm the website and address.
- Ask who owns the company.
- Ask how long the company has operated.
- Ask whether the project record matches the company being discussed online.
- Ask for credentials that can be checked with the issuing organizations.
- Visit one of our Ottawa Design Centres.
- Speak directly with our representatives.
- Ask us about anything you have read online.
If a post or review concerns you, send it to us. We will help you identify whether it is about OakWood by the Liptak Group, the Oakwood Group, another unrelated Oakwood-named company, or something else.
That usually takes minutes.
Visit Us in Person
The fastest way to verify who we are is to meet us.
Visit one of our Ottawa Design Centres, or even better, visit our award-winning Design Centre Headquarters building where you can speak directly with management and meet the team. Bring the hardest questions you have. Ask us directly about what you have read. Ask us how our process works. Ask us what legal name appears on our contracts. Ask us how project scope, pricing, changes, scheduling, warranty, and communication are handled.
We would rather answer hard questions early than have a client make a decision based on confusion.
A Final Word From OakWood by the Liptak Group
The OakWood name has been part of our family and our work since 1956.
We did not choose to share a confusingly similar name with another company. We did not choose to receive phone calls about projects we did not build, invoices we did not issue, contracts we did not sign, or allegations involving a company we do not own or control.
But we can choose to respond clearly.
OakWood Designers & Builders Inc. by the Liptak Group is not The Oakwood Group of Kingston.
If you are researching us, thank you. That is exactly what a responsible homeowner should do.
Just make sure the company you are researching is actually us.
